Why Your Lights Flicker (And What an Electrician Looks For)

Sometimes it's a serious wiring issue. This guide explains what's actually causing flicker, what an electrician looks for, and when you should treat it as urgent.

Single light, occasional flicker

Most likely:

  • Loose bulb — the bulb isn't fully seated in the socket

Loose bulb

LED dimmer incompatibility

  • Whole-home flicker when a specific appliance starts — possible failing connection
  • Spark or flash when you flip a switch
  • Buzzing from the panel — possible loose connection
  • Flicker after water damage — water in electrical equipment

These suggest an active electrical issue that can become a fire or shock risk quickly.

When flicker is benign

A few patterns that are usually fine:
