How to Lower Your Electric Bill (Real Savings, Not Gimmicks)

There's a lot of advice floating around about lowering your electric bill. Most of it is either obvious ("turn off lights when you leave a room") or wrong ("close vents in unused rooms"). This post is a filter — what's actually worth doing, what isn't, and what an electrician might find that's costing you real money without you knowing.

The big three: where most of your bill comes from

In a typical LA home, your electric bill breaks down roughly like this:

  • HVAC (heating and cooling): 40–50%
  • Water heating: 15–25%
  • Lighting and small appliances: 10–15%
  • Refrigeration: 8–10%
  • Everything else (dryer, oven, electronics, EV): the rest

If you want to move the number, focus on HVAC first. Everything else is incremental.

HVAC: where actual savings come from

Set the thermostat higher in summer (and lower in winter)

Each degree of setback saves roughly 1–3% on cooling/heating costs. In LA's climate, going from 72°F to 76°F in summer (or 70°F to 66°F in winter) can shave 8–12% off your bill without anyone noticing.

A smart thermostat makes this automatic. The savings usually pay for the thermostat in the first year.

Service the AC yearly

A poorly maintained AC can use 10–20% more electricity than a tuned one. Annual service (clean coils, check refrigerant, clear drain) is the single highest-ROI maintenance task for most LA homes.

Seal the ducts

If your ducts leak, your AC works harder than it has to. Most LA homes have 10–30% duct leakage. Sealing and insulating the ducts can cut cooling costs by 10–20%.

Mind the sun

Window films and exterior shading (awnings, mature trees) reduce solar heat gain. South- and west-facing windows are the priorities. This is a one-time investment that pays back for decades.

Water heating: the second-largest load

Lower the thermostat on the water heater

Most water heaters are set to 140°F out of the box. 120°F is sufficient for nearly every household use, prevents scalding, and saves 10–15% on water heating. Most water heaters have an easy dial adjustment.

Insulate the first 6 feet of pipe out of the water heater

This is a $10 DIY project that pays back in months.

If your water heater is older than 12 years, plan for replacement

When it dies, heat pump water heaters are now the most efficient option for most LA homes. They use 60–70% less electricity than standard resistance water heaters. The catch: they need a specific install location (somewhere with airflow and condensation drain access) and may require electrical upgrades.

Refrigeration: hidden but real

Your fridge runs 24/7. A fridge from the early 2000s can use 2–3× the electricity of a modern Energy Star unit. If your fridge is over 12 years old, replacing it can save $100–$200/year.

In the meantime:

  • Keep coils clean (vacuum the back/bottom every 6 months)
  • Check door seals (dollar bill test — close the door on a bill; it should resist sliding out)
  • Set the fridge to 37°F and freezer to 0°F — colder than that wastes electricity

Lighting: easy and obvious but small savings

Switching to LED saves real money over years, but the annual impact is small unless you have a lot of incandescent bulbs running long hours. The math:

  • 60W incandescent replaced with 9W LED: $7/year saved (per bulb, 3 hours/day average use)
  • 20 bulbs × $7 = $140/year

That's worth doing if you're replacing bulbs anyway. Don't tear out working incandescents just for the LED savings.

What an electrician might find that costs you money

A licensed electrician doing an energy walk-through can identify things you wouldn't notice yourself:

  • Aging air handler or blower motor drawing more current than it should
  • Inefficient resistance heating elements that could be replaced with heat-pump style systems
  • Phantom loads from older electronics, always-on appliances, or power supplies
  • Inadequate insulation in the attic or rim joist (not strictly electrical, but tied to your bill)
  • An oversized AC (common in older LA homes) that cycles inefficiently

Many of these have a 1–3 year payback on the work.

Things that don't actually save much

Worth skipping:

  • "Smart" power strips that cut phantom load — most modern electronics already do this internally; savings are real but small
  • Tankless water heaters "to save on standby losses" — modern tanked water heaters are well-insulated; payback math is thin
  • Solar panels before fixing basic efficiency — seal the ducts first, then size the solar; you'll need less of it
  • Closing vents in unused rooms — this often *increases* total energy use because the system pressure changes

A realistic annual savings target

For an average LA home doing the higher-impact items above (thermostat adjustment + sealing/insulating the ducts + LED where bulbs need replacing + lower water heater setpoint + AC service), realistic annual savings are:

  • $300–$600/year if you're starting from "no efficiency work done"
  • $150–$300/year if you've already done the basics

The bigger savings — heat pump water heater, new efficient AC, full envelope sealing — are bigger projects with longer paybacks but real returns.
