How to Read Your Electrical Panel (and When to Open It Yourself)
Your electrical panel is the heart of your home's electrical system. It distributes power from the utility to every circuit in your home, and it includes the safety devices that protect you from electrical faults. This guide explains how to read your panel, when it's safe to look inside, and when to call an electrician.
What an electrical panel actually does
A few functions in one box:
Main breaker
- Disconnects all power to your home when switched off
- Sized to your service — 100A, 125A, 150A, 200A, or larger for modern homes
- Where the utility feed terminates — the wires from the meter connect here
Branch circuit breakers
- One per circuit — typically 15A, 20A, or 30A depending on what the circuit serves
- Each protects a specific area — kitchen, bedroom, garage, etc.
- Trips when overloaded or shorted — interrupts power to that circuit only
Bus bars
- Distribute power to the branch breakers
- Carry the high current — typically copper or aluminum bars
Neutral and ground bars
- Return paths for current
- Ground bar connects to the home's grounding system
Modern panels integrate all these functions. Older panels may have separate components or unusual layouts.
What's inside the panel door
The inside of the panel door typically has:
- A label identifying the panel (manufacturer, model, amperage)
- A circuit directory — what each breaker controls
- A label identifying main breaker rating and service type
If the label is missing or unreadable, an electrician can identify the panel and create a directory.
What's inside the panel itself (when open)
Behind the panel cover:
Main breaker
- Largest breaker at the top or bottom of the panel
- Single switch that controls all power
- Labeled with amperage — typically 100A, 125A, 150A, or 200A
Branch breakers
- Smaller breakers arranged in rows or columns
- Each labeled with amperage (15, 20, 30, etc.)
- Each tied to a circuit through the home
Bus bars
- Metal bars that the breakers clip onto
- Carry the main current from the main breaker to the branch breakers
- Typically not visible unless the breakers are removed
Neutral and ground bars
- Strips of metal with many screws
- White wires (neutral) connect to the neutral bar
- Bare or green wires (ground) connect to the ground bar
- Sometimes combined in subpanels; always separate in main panels
How to read the circuit directory
Most panels have a circuit directory on the inside of the door. The directory lists each breaker and what it controls.
Common labels
- Kitchen outlets
- Living room
- Bedroom 1 / 2 / 3
- Bathroom
- Garage
- HVAC / AC / Furnace
- Water heater
- Dryer
- Range / Stove
- Dishwasher
- Disposal
- Microwave
- Outdoor / Porch / Patio
- Pool / Hot tub
Some directories are accurate; many are vague or outdated. If yours is unclear, an electrician can map the circuits.
What to do if the directory is missing
- Test each breaker by switching off and seeing what loses power
- Hire an electrician to create a proper directory
- Use a circuit tracer — a tool that detects which breaker controls which outlet or fixture
When you can safely open the panel
The panel cover is removable, and opening it is generally safe if:
- You don't touch any internal components — just look
- The cover is properly secured when closed
- You're not standing on a wet surface while doing this
- You have a flashlight if the area is dim
The risk is touching live parts inside the panel, which carry the full service amperage. Even with the main breaker off, the line side (utility feed) remains live until the utility disconnects service. Touching the line side can cause serious injury or death.
Safe to do
- Read the directory
- Visually inspect for obvious damage (burn marks, melted insulation)
- Note the main breaker size for insurance or appliance questions
- Count the number of breakers for general capacity assessment
Don't do
- Don't touch any wires or breakers beyond the plastic switch
- Don't remove the panel cover if you're not confident doing so
- Don't reset a tripped breaker repeatedly — if it trips, there's a reason
- Don't replace breakers yourself unless you're qualified
- Don't work in the panel with wet hands or while standing on wet surfaces
Signs of panel problems
Visual cues from outside the panel (with cover closed) and through the cover window (if present):
Visible from outside
- Breaker handle sticking out — tripped breaker
- Breaker in middle position — partially tripped, needs full reset
- Visible burn marks around the cover or panel face
- Melting smell from the panel area
Visible through window or with cover open
- Discolored breakers — heat damage
- Burn marks on bus bars — serious fault, needs immediate attention
- Corrosion on the bus bars or connections — moisture or environmental damage
- Loose wires — improper installation or aging
- Double-tapped breakers — two wires on one breaker (code violation)
- Open knockouts — gaps that allow pests or moisture in
Audible or other signs
- Buzzing or humming from the panel — loose connection, possibly dangerous
- Warm spots on the panel cover — overcurrent
- Smell of melting — active problem, urgent
Any of these warrant calling an electrician.
Common panel types in older LA homes
A few specific brands and configurations to know:
Federal Pacific (FPE)
- Stab-Lok design — known safety issues
- Breakers may not trip when they should
- Many insurers won't cover homes with active FPE panels
- Should be replaced if identified
Zinsco
- Similar issues to FPE
- Breakers may fuse to the bus bar — won't trip
- Insurance complications
- Should be replaced
Pushmatic / Bulldog
- Older design — common in 1950s–1970s homes
- Breakers may not trip reliably
- Insurance considerations
Challenger
- Recalled panels in some configurations
- Verify model if your home has one
Modern panels (Square D, Eaton, Siemens, GE)
- Generally reliable if properly installed
- Listed and tested
- Standard for current code
If your home has any of the older/recalcitrant panels, an electrician can evaluate and recommend replacement.
Capacity and what it means
A few practical considerations:
What 100A vs 200A means
- 100A: Adequate for smaller homes with few large appliances
- 200A: Standard for modern homes with central AC, EV chargers, electric ranges
- Higher: For very large homes, multiple EV chargers, electric heating
Adding load
If you're adding:
- Central AC — may need panel upgrade
- EV charger — often needs panel upgrade or load management
- Electric range — depends on existing service
- Hot tub — significant load, may need upgrade
- Solar with battery — may need panel upgrade for inverter
An electrician can do a load calculation to determine whether your panel has capacity for additions.
Resetting a tripped breaker
When a breaker trips:
1. Identify which breaker is in the middle (tripped) position 2. Switch it fully off — sometimes a tripped breaker needs to be moved past off before resetting 3. Switch it back to on 4. Test the circuit — does it stay on?
If it trips again:
- Stop trying to reset — there's a fault
- Unplug devices on the circuit, then try again
- If it still trips — call an electrician
- If it stays on after unplugging — plug devices back in one at a time to find the culprit
If a breaker trips repeatedly without obvious cause, an electrician should evaluate.
When to call an electrician
A few situations where calling is the right move:
- Any visible damage — burn marks, melted insulation, corrosion
- Any unusual smells — melting, burning, fishy smell (electrical fires often smell like fish)
- Buzzing or humming from the panel
- Repeated tripping without obvious cause
- Adding major load — AC, EV charger, hot tub
- Older panels — FPE, Zinsco, others known for issues
- Renovation or addition — may require panel work
- Real estate transactions — most buyers want panel documentation
- Insurance — disclosure and documentation needs
- Annual checkup — many electricians offer this, especially for older homes
A note on "you can do it yourself"
There are limits to DIY electrical work in LA:
- Minor repairs (replacing outlets, switches) — homeowners can do this in some cases
- Panel work — requires permit and licensed electrician for most work
- Service changes — must be done by licensed electrician
- New circuits — permit and licensed electrician
If you're not sure whether work requires a professional, ask before starting. Mistakes in electrical work are fire and shock risks.
Panel documentation for insurance and real estate
For insurance or real estate purposes:
- Panel inspection report — electrician's written assessment
- Panel directory — accurate mapping of circuits
- Service size — main breaker amperage
